Back Somersault Meaning in Gymnastics

A back somersault is a backward flip where the knees are tucked. The gymnast pushes off the floor and jumps high into the air. While in flight, the athlete pulls the knees toward the chest tightly. The body rotates backward in a circular shape for one full turn. This move is one of the first flips a gymnast will learn. The gymnast then extends the legs to land on both feet safely. This skill builds the foundation for all other backward tumbling and twisting. A gymnast performs a back somersault during a basic floor exercise pass. The athlete must use a fast arm swing to gain vertical height. Looking at a spot on the wall helps the gymnast time the tuck. Keeping the tuck tight makes the body spin much faster in flight. The gymnast must open the body at the right time to land. Landing with the chest up prevents the athlete from falling forward or back. This flip requires explosive power from the legs to clear the floor. Judges look for a high peak and a very steady landing position.
