Backhand defense refers to a specific stroke used to return a fast opponent attack. The player uses the back of the racket hand to strike the shuttlecock. This move usually happens when the opponent hits a smash toward the body. Players hold the racket across their chest to create a solid hitting surface. A short and quick flick of the wrist provides enough power. The opponent hits a hard smash toward the left side of the player. The defender turns the racket over and pops the shuttlecock back. This controlled return lands softly near the net to slow the rally. Maintaining a wide stance helps a player react to these fast shots. Using the thumb for leverage increases the strength of a backhand flick. Low racket preparation is essential for a successful defensive return in badminton.
