A backhand down the line is a shot hit straight along the sideline instead of across the court. This is widely considered one of the most difficult and prestigious shots in the sport.
The ball must travel over the highest part of the net, leaving very little room for error. If hit correctly, it is almost impossible for an opponent to reach because it moves so fast. Most players use this shot to change the direction of a rally and catch their rival off guard. It requires a very early contact point and a perfectly straight follow-through.
For example, after hitting several cross-court backhands, a player might suddenly rip a backhand down the line to win the point.
