Backing away involves a batsman moving their feet toward the leg side rail. This movement creates extra space to swing the bat toward the off side. Players use this tactic to avoid fast balls aimed directly at their bodies. It allows for a more powerful swing at balls that are normally difficult. This move carries risk because it leaves the stumps completely unprotected by bat. If the batsman misses the ball the bowler will likely hit the stumps. Fast bowlers often respond by following the batsman with a very tight line. A batsman backs away to hit a fast ball over the infielders.
