Baize Meaning in Billiards

Baize is another name for the green cloth on many billiards tables. It refers to the woven fabric used as the playing surface. The material allows balls to glide evenly. Most baize appears green because it reduces eye strain. However, other colors also exist. The cloth must stay tight and smooth. Loose fabric causes uneven rolls. For example, a player lines up a long straight shot. The ball travels cleanly across the baize without wobbling. Well-installed baize supports steady, reliable play.
