A balk refers to an incomplete or interrupted start during a diving attempt. The diver begins their approach or press but stops before leaving the board. This action signals a loss of concentration or a physical slip-up. The diver must step back and wait for the signal to try again. A second balk on the same dive attempt results in zero points. This term is most common in springboard events during the running hurdle phase. One example of a balk is a diver tripping during the approach. Safety is the primary reason an athlete might choose to take a balk. It is better to stop than to perform a dangerous or uncontrolled dive. Coaches train divers to reset their focus quickly after such an interruption occurs. The head judge determines if the action qualifies as a formal balk event.
