Balkline is a specific version of billiards designed to make the game more difficult for experts. The table surface is divided by lines into several rectangular zones called balkspaces. These lines are drawn a set distance from the cushions, such as 18 inches. In this game, players can only score a limited number of points while the balls stay inside one zone. This rule prevents players from keeping the balls gathered in one corner for too long. It forces them to move the balls across the table, showing true mastery of control. If you exceed the point limit in a zone, you must drive at least one ball out. For example, a player scores two points but must then move the ball across the line. This prevents the endless scoring streaks common in older, simpler versions of the game. It is a highly technical discipline that requires extreme precision and delicate touch. Understanding these boundaries is the key to mastering this classic professional challenge.
