A bar box is a slang term for a smaller, coin-operated pool table found in bars. These tables are usually seven feet long, compared to the nine-foot tables used in professional tournaments. They are designed for fast play and are often made with durable materials to handle constant use. Because the table is smaller, the balls tend to cluster together more often, making the game more crowded. Playing on a bar box requires a different strategy than playing on a full-sized professional table. For example, a player who is used to a nine-foot table might find a bar box very cramped at first. The shorter distances make pocketing easier, but navigating through traffic much harder. It is the most common type of table that casual fans will encounter in their daily lives. Many great players started their careers practicing on a local bar box.
