Bar Contact Meaning in Weightlifting

Bar contact describes the moment the barbell touches the lifter’s body during an upward pull. This interaction typically occurs at the thighs or the hip crease to transfer power. Proper contact allows the athlete to use their legs to propel the weight vertically. A lifter feels the bar brush their upper legs before the final explosive jump. Keeping the bar close to the body reduces the horizontal distance the weight must travel. Excessive contact can cause the bar to loop outward and ruin the balance of the lift.
