A bar drop happens when a lifter releases the barbell from an overhead position. This must occur after the officials give the down signal to signify a successful lift. The athlete must maintain control of the bar with their hands until it passes the shoulders. A lifter drops the bar onto the rubber mats after receiving three white lights. Releasing the bar too early results in a failed lift and zero points for that turn. Controlled dropping protects the equipment and ensures the safety of everyone on the platform.
