Bar Oscillation Meaning in Weightlifting

Bar oscillation describes the vertical bending and whipping motion of a loaded barbell during a lift. This vibration occurs because the steel bar is flexible under heavy loads of metal plates. Skilled lifters use this timing to help propel the weight upward during the jerk phase. A lifter waits for the bar oscillation to reach the highest point before pushing. Mastering this rhythm allows an athlete to move more weight with less physical effort. Thinner bars usually exhibit more oscillation than thicker bars used for basic power movements.
