A bash guard is a protective plate or ring mounted to the bottom of a bike. It sits near the front gears to shield them from rocks and logs. Mountain bikers and BMX riders use them to prevent damage to expensive metal parts. If you misjudge a jump, the guard hits the obstacle instead of the chain. This keeps your chain from breaking and prevents your frame from getting scratched. Most guards are made from tough plastic or thick aluminum for maximum durability. They are especially useful on technical trails with many large obstacles or drop-offs. Some designs replace the largest front gear entirely on specific mountain bike setups. They add a bit of weight but save you from costly repairs. For example, a rider rolls over a fallen tree and feels their bash guard hit the wood. The bike stays safe and the rider continues without any broken equipment. It is like a skid plate for a bicycle.
