The battery is a term used to describe the combination of the pitcher and the catcher working together as a single unit during a game. These two players are the most involved in every single play because the game cannot move forward until the pitcher throws the ball and the catcher receives it. They must be perfectly in sync, often using secret hand signals to decide which type of pitch to throw and where to aim it to trick the hitter.
The term comes from the 19th century and was originally compared to a “battery” of cannons in the military, representing the combined firepower of the two players. A great battery is built on trust and communication. The catcher acts as the “field general,” watching how the batter stands and telling the pitcher what to do. If the pitcher is the engine of the team, the catcher is the driver. When these two players have a strong connection, they can dominate a game by keeping the hitters off balance. This relationship is so special that some star pitchers have a “personal catcher,” which is a specific teammate they prefer to work with every time they play because their chemistry is so high.
