Being behind the ball means positioning your body so the ball is in front of you before you swing. It is the most important part of good footwork and balance. If you are too close to the ball, your arms will feel cramped and weak.
By staying behind it, you can use your legs and body weight to drive through the shot. This creates much more power and control with less effort. For example, a player sprints to the corner and stops just behind the ball’s path. They then step forward into the shot to hit a powerful forehand winner. This habit prevents you from reaching or leaning backwards while you hit. It allows you to see the ball clearly and make clean contact every time.
Good players always look like they have plenty of time because they move early to get behind the ball. It is the secret to consistent and effortless tennis. Stay light on your feet to make these quick adjustments.
