Behind the gate refers to the legal way a player must enter a ruck. The gate is an imaginary line created by the hindmost feet of players in the ruck. To join the fight for the ball, you must come from directly behind. Entering from the side is a foul because it is considered unfair and dangerous. This rule ensures that both teams face each other head-on during the contest. Referees watch this area very closely to keep the game fair and organized. If a player enters from the side, the referee will award a penalty kick. For example, a defender might try to sneak in from the side to steal the ball. The referee will blow the whistle because the player did not go behind the gate. It maintains a clear structure for every physical contest on the ground.
