Binding at the mauls describes how players must hold onto each other during a moving contest. A maul happens when a ball-carrier is held up by defenders and teammates join. Every player joining the maul must use their full arm to grip a teammate. This grip must be from the shoulder to the wrist to be legal. Simply leaning on the group or touching them with a hand is not enough. This rule keeps the mass of players together as a single, safe unit. It prevents individuals from breaking off or causing the formation to collapse dangerously. For example, a forward might grab the jersey of a teammate to help push the maul. This strong bind allows the team to drive forward toward the goal line together. It is a display of collective strength and technical discipline.
