A block shot occurs when a defensive player stops a ball traveling toward the goal. Defenders use their hands and arms to create a physical barrier against the shooter. This action usually takes place at the edge of the six meter goal area. Players must keep their feet on the ground or jump vertically to remain legal. Success depends on timing the jump to match the release of the handball. A defender successfully deflects a powerful shot out of bounds during a close game. This technique prevents the ball from reaching the goalkeeper and reduces the scoring threat. Teams often use two or three players to form a tall wall against outside shooters. Effective blocking requires constant communication between the goalkeeper and the defensive line players. Defenders avoid hitting the opponent’s arms to prevent the referee from calling a foul.
