A body shot is a ball hit directly at the opponent’s torso rather than to their side. This tactic is used when the opponent is at the net and has covered the passing lanes. It is difficult for them to react because they have to move their body out of the way to swing.
For example, a player at the net gets a fast body shot and has to awkwardly jump aside to hit a weak return. This often results in a ‘sitter’ that the attacker can easily finish on the next ball. While it can look aggressive, it is a perfectly legal and effective strategy in professional tennis. It is especially common in doubles where the net is often crowded with players.
The goal is to ‘cramp’ the opponent and force a mistake. Most players apologize if the ball actually hits the person, but the tactic remains a standard part of the game.
