Bombora Meaning in Surfing

Bombora is an Australian term for waves breaking over a deep offshore reef. These spots are located far away from the shoreline and the beach break. Waves only break here when a very large and powerful ocean swell arrives. In local slang, these areas are often called a bommie by the surfers. Bomboras can be hazardous because they do not always have breaking waves today. A surfer rides a massive peak at a bombora several miles out at sea. The size of these waves makes them attractive to big wave riding experts. One athlete prepares for a session at a remote bombora during a giant swell. This term has been part of surf culture for many decades in the Pacific.
