Bonking Meaning in Cycling

Bonking is a term used when a cyclist completely runs out of energy during a ride. This happens because the body has used up all its stored carbohydrates for fuel. When you bonk, your legs feel like lead and your brain feels foggy or confused. It can happen suddenly, turning a strong ride into a desperate struggle to move. To avoid this, cyclists must eat small snacks and drink sugary fluids consistently while riding. Once you reach the point of bonking, it is very difficult to recover without a long rest and lots of food. It is one of the most unpleasant experiences a beginner can have on a bike. Experienced riders always carry extra energy gels or bars just in case. For example, a rider forgets to eat during a long mountain climb and suddenly finds they can no longer pedal uphill. They have to stop at a gas station to eat a candy bar before they can finish the trip home. It is a physical wall that requires sugar to break through.
