Box Meaning in American Football

The box refers to the area near the line of scrimmage between the tackles. Defenders inside the box focus on stopping the run. This area matters because control there decides physical battles. Teams count defenders in the box before snapping. Offenses adjust plays based on that count. A crowded box invites passing plays. A light box favors running. Coaches read this constantly. For example, a quarterback checks to a run after seeing few defenders in the box.
