Burying the needle means riding at your absolute maximum physical limit. This slang term refers to pushing your heart rate or power output into the red zone. It is the point where your breathing is labored and your muscles are screaming. You can only maintain this level of effort for a very short period of time. Cyclists bury the needle during a final sprint or a steep mountain attack. It requires immense mental toughness to stay at this level of suffering. Once you finish the effort, you will need a long time to recover your breath. It is the cycling equivalent of redlining an engine in a fast car. For example, a racer buries the needle on the final climb to drop their last remaining rival. They push so hard that they can barely stand up after crossing the finish line. It represents the highest level of commitment a rider can give to a race.
