Camber refers to the natural aerodynamic curve or fullness built into the shape of a sail. This curvature works like an airplane wing to create the lift that moves the boat. Designers adjust the amount of curve to suit different wind speeds and various sailing conditions. A deep curve provides more power in light air while a flat sail works better. Sailors change the camber by adjusting the tension on the edges of the sail fabric. An example happens when a sailor tightens the bottom of the sail to flatten the shape. This action reduces the curve so the boat can handle a very strong breeze safely. Proper camber management ensures the boat moves as fast as possible through the moving air. Understanding how to control this shape is a key skill for improving overall boat performance. Most modern sails use internal horizontal slats to help maintain this specific and vital curve. Without this depth the sail would simply flap and fail to generate any forward motion.
