A carry occurs when the ball stays on the strings of the racket for too long. In a legal tennis shot, the ball must bounce off the strings almost instantly. If a player accidentally catches or scoops the ball, they have committed a foul. This usually happens when a player is stretching and loses control of their swing. The ball appears to be pushed or slung rather than being hit cleanly. This is illegal because it gives the player too much control over the ball’s direction. The umpire or the player themselves should call this foul immediately during the live point. For example, a player trying to reach a low volley might accidentally scoop the ball upward. The opponent would then receive the point because the contact was not a clean strike. Modern rackets make this rare, but it still happens during frantic defensive plays. A clean hit is the only way to score a legal point.
