Carve Meaning in Surfing

To carve means to perform a long and powerful turn using rails. The surfer buries the edge of the board into the water for grip. This movement creates a smooth arc on the open face of the wave. Carving helps the rider change direction while maintaining a very high velocity. The body weight must shift toward the rail to engage the board shape. Water often sprays out from the side of the board during this move. A surfer carves a deep circle on a large and clean ocean wall. Strong legs are required to hold the board steady throughout the entire turn. One athlete leans low into a carve at the base of waves. This foundational maneuver demonstrates a high level of control and grace on boards.
