A chipped catch occurs when the batsman hits the ball weakly into the air. This happens when the player does not commit fully to a specific stroke. The ball loses its power and loops toward a fielder in the infield. It usually results from a mistimed drive or a poorly executed defensive shot. The fielder must move quickly to catch the ball before it hits ground. This error often happens when the pitch is slower than the batsman expected. A batsman chips the ball to the mid-off fielder during the third over. Keeping the head still during the shot reduces the chance of this mistake. Firmly completing the swing ensures the ball travels past the close-in fielding ring.
