Choice position refers to the right of a wrestler to select the starting alignment. This choice occurs at the beginning of the second and third periods of a match. A coin toss before the second period determines which athlete gets to choose first. The winner can pick the top, bottom, or neutral position for the start. A wrestler may also defer their choice until the start of the third period. This strategy allows the athlete to see the score before making a final decision. A wrestler wins the coin toss and chooses the bottom position to score an escape. The referee then signals for the athletes to line up in the referee’s position. This rule adds a layer of strategy to the physical contest between the two athletes. Choosing the correct position can help a wrestler overcome a small point deficit late. Most wrestlers pick the position where they feel the most confident and technically strong.
