Chukoku is the first level of warning given to a competitor in a karate match. This is a soft penalty used for minor rules violations like stepping out of bounds. It serves as a notice to the athlete that they must correct their behavior immediately. No points are awarded to the opponent at this stage of the penalty system in place. If the athlete continues to break the rules they will receive more severe formal penalties. A referee gives a verbal warning to a student for pushing an opponent during a round. Paying attention to the calls of the referee helps an athlete avoid more serious fouls. Good sportsmanship and following the rules are central parts of the competitive martial arts.
