A clean break occurs when an attacking player runs completely through the defensive line without being touched. This happens when a runner finds a gap in the defense or uses a clever move to bypass tacklers. Once the player is through the line, they usually only have the full-back left to beat. Clean breaks are the most dangerous moments for a defense because they often lead to long-distance tries. They require a combination of speed, vision, and excellent support play from teammates. Fans love these moments as they provide high-speed drama and excitement on the open field. A team with many clean breaks usually dominates the scoreboard by the end of the match. For example, a center might sprint through a small hole between two defenders and run forty metres. They pass to a winger who scores in the corner while the crowd cheers. It is a total defensive failure.
