Coming about describes the maneuver of turning the bow of the boat through the wind. This action changes the side of the boat that the wind hits during travel. The sails move from one side to the other as the boat crosses the breeze. This process allows the boat to zigzag toward a destination located directly upwind of it. The crew must coordinate their movements to pull the ropes at the correct moment. An example occurs when a captain shouts a warning before turning the boat sharply. The sails flap for a second before filling with air on the new side. This movement requires the boat to have enough speed to complete the entire turn. If the boat stops in the middle it becomes stuck and loses its forward motion. This is one of the most fundamental maneuvers for every beginning sailor to master. Mastering this skill allows a sailor to travel in any direction regardless of wind.
