The competition clock tracks the time an athlete has to begin their lift. A lifter usually receives one minute to step onto the platform and pull. This timer starts once the loaders finish placing the correct weights on bar. If an athlete follows their own previous attempt they receive two full minutes. The clock helps the event run smoothly and keeps the audience engaged throughout. A buzzer sounds when the time expires to signal a missed or void lift. An athlete watches the red numbers to time their final chalking of the hands. Starting the lift before the clock reaches zero prevents a technical disqualification.
