Controlled descent describes the intentional and steady lowering of a barbell during the first half of a lift. The athlete avoids dropping the weight too fast to maintain perfect body tension and balance. This control ensures that the lifter stays in the correct path before reaching the bottom position. Moving with a steady speed prevents the weight from pulling the athlete forward or out of alignment. A lifter counts two seconds while lowering into a heavy squat during a technical training session. This focus on the downward phase builds the strength needed to handle much heavier loads safely.
