Conversion Meaning in Rugby Union

A conversion is a kick at the goalposts awarded immediately after a team scores a try. The kicker attempts to send the ball between the two upright posts and over the horizontal crossbar. This kick is taken from a spot in line with where the try was originally touched down. A successful conversion is worth two extra points, making a total of seven points for that scoring sequence. If the try was scored near the sideline, the angle makes the kick much more difficult for the player. Kickers often use a plastic tee to hold the ball steady while they take their measured approach. These extra points are often the difference between winning and losing tight international matches. For example, a team might score a try to tie the game in the final minute of play.
