It is the only mountain bike discipline that is part of the Summer Olympic Games. You must be able to navigate rocks and roots while maintaining a very high heart rate. It is a great way to enjoy nature while getting a demanding full-body workout.
For example, a rider enters a local cross-country race that covers three laps of a hilly forest park. They must manage their energy carefully to finish the ten-mile course without getting too tired. It is the ultimate test for off-road endurance athletes.
