A cutter is a type of delivery where a fast bowler uses their fingers to put spin on the ball, causing it to change direction after bouncing. Unlike a regular fast ball, the cutter travels slightly slower and grips the pitch, making it very difficult for the batter to time their shot.
Example: The bowler used a sharp leg cutter to move the ball away from the batter and clip the edge of the bat.
Pro-Tip: Off-cutters move toward the batter while leg-cutters move away, and both are most effective on dry or worn pitches. This change of pace is a brilliant way to trick aggressive players who are expecting a much faster delivery.
