De-Ashi-Barai is a fundamental foot sweep that targets an opponent’s advancing or retreating foot. The attacker uses the sole of their foot to flick the opponent’s ankle sideways. This action happens exactly when the defender moves their weight onto that specific leg. The opponent loses balance and falls toward the side of the swept foot. This technique requires very little power but demands perfect timing and a soft touch. A judoka scores a point by catching the opponent mid-stride during a walking movement. Keeping the sweeping foot close to the mat ensures the move stays hidden. This sweep works effectively against opponents who take large or heavy steps during combat.
