Dead Rail Meaning in Billiards

A dead rail is a cushion that has lost its elasticity and no longer bounces balls correctly. Over time, the rubber inside the rail can harden or become unglued from the wood. When a ball hits a dead rail, it makes a thudding sound and stops quickly instead of springing back. This makes it almost impossible to predict bank shots or control position. For example, a player tries to bank a ball off the side cushion, but the dead rail kills the speed entirely. The ball falls short of the pocket, and the player loses their turn due to the equipment failure. Playing on a table with dead rails is a major challenge even for the best pros.
