A defensive formation is the specific structural arrangement of players guarding their own goal. The most common formation is the six zero where all players stand together. Other setups include the five one which places one defender further out front. These patterns help teams counter the specific offensive strengths of their various opponents. Coaches choose a formation based on the speed and height of the players. One example features a team using a four two formation to pressure backcourt. This setup disrupts the passing lanes of the opposing playmakers and outside shooters. The choice of formation dictates how much space the defense covers on court. Players must understand their specific roles within each different team defensive structure. A strong formation makes it very difficult for the offense to penetrate the middle.
