Defensive Rating Meaning in Basketball

Defensive rating estimates the number of points a team allows per hundred possessions. This metric evaluates the overall effectiveness of a defensive unit regardless of game speed. Low ratings indicate a team prevents opponents from scoring efficiently throughout the entire game. Coaches use this data to identify which lineups prevent the most baskets during play. Individual defensive ratings track how many points opponents score while a player is present. A team allows only ninety points per one hundred possessions against a top rival. This low rating proves the defenders communicated well and contested every opponent shot.
