Deliberate Foul Meaning in Billiards

A deliberate foul is a strategic move where a player intentionally breaks a rule to gain an advantage. This usually involves moving a ball into a position that makes the table much harder for the opponent. While you give up ball-in-hand, the resulting layout might be so difficult that the opponent still cannot score. This is a controversial but legal tactic in many competitive formats. For example, a player intentionally taps the cue ball into a cluster to block their opponent’s only shot. They accept the foul penalty because it prevents the opponent from winning the game on that turn. It is a high-risk move that requires a deep understanding of table strategy.
