The dip is the quick downward movement of the knees before an overhead lift. The lifter bends their legs slightly while keeping the torso perfectly upright. This action stores elastic energy in the muscles for a powerful upward drive. A shallow and fast dip provides more power than a slow or deep one. The athlete must keep their heels on the ground during this entire phase. Shifting the weight to the toes causes the bar to drift forward. A lifter performs a sharp dip to prepare for a heavy power jerk. Staying vertical during the move keeps the weight balanced over the midfoot.
