A dive group is a category that classifies dives by their direction. There are six primary groups including forward, back, inward, and reverse. Two more groups cover twisting maneuvers and armstand starts for platform events. Each group requires the athlete to face a specific way at takeoff. Divers must usually perform a dive from several groups in one round. This variety shows the athlete’s versatility across different types of aerial moves. One example of a dive group is the inward group of dives. Judges evaluate how well a diver masters each unique direction of travel. Divers often have a favorite group where they feel most naturally comfortable. Competing in multiple groups is a requirement for all high-level diving meets. This rule prevents athletes from only doing one type of easy dive.
