A dominant tackle is a defensive hit that stops a runner instantly and pushes them backward. Unlike a passive tackle where the defender is pushed back, here the defender wins the physical battle. The tackler uses their shoulder and legs to drive the ball-carrier toward their own goal line. This move is a massive psychological boost for the defending team and can rattle the attacking players. It also gives the defense a better chance to steal the ball at the resulting ruck or breakdown. To achieve this, the defender must strike the opponent with great timing and stay very low. Dominant tackles are the best way to stop an attacking team from gaining any forward momentum. For example, a flanker might hit a runner right as they catch the ball and drive them back five metres. The crowd will roar as the defender physically asserts their authority over the play. It is the ultimate goal for every defender.
