Double Play Meaning in Softball

A double play is a defensive act that results in two outs during one play. This usually happens when a fielder catches a ground ball and throws to multiple bases. The defense must work with extreme speed and precision to record both outs successfully. Most double plays involve a throw to second base followed by a throw to first. A shortstop scoops a ground ball and flips it quickly to the second baseman. The second baseman touches the bag and fires the ball to the first base fielder. This play effectively ends a scoring threat by removing two offensive players from the field. It requires perfect timing and clear communication between all of the involved infield defenders. Execution of a double play often changes the momentum of a close softball game.
