Double Up Meaning in Surfing

A double up occurs when two individual waves merge into one large peak. This happens as the energy of one swell catches the wave in front. The result is a much steeper and more powerful wave face for surfing. A double up often creates a very hollow and fast section in water. Surfers must be careful because the takeoff can be very sudden and vertical. A surfer catches a double up that grows twice as large at peak. The extra water volume makes the tube much more intense and very heavy. One rider navigates the bump where the two waves joined during the ride.
