Drafting is driving closely behind another car to gain speed. The lead car pushes air aside as it moves. This creates a pocket of lower air resistance behind it. The following driver experiences less drag in that space. With less drag, the car can accelerate more easily. For example on a long straight a driver stays tucked behind a rival. Near the braking zone he pulls out to overtake. Drafting works best on fast sections of track. However getting too close in corners reduces grip. Drivers must balance speed gain with control. Smart drafting creates clear passing chances.
