Drive Meaning in Weightlifting

The drive describes the explosive upward push following the dip in a jerk. The athlete straightens their legs with maximum force to propel the bar upward. This movement transfers power from the floor through the body and into the weight. A strong drive creates enough momentum for the lifter to move under the bar. The arms only guide the weight until the legs finish their powerful extension. This phase requires perfect timing to maximize the vertical travel of the barbell. A lifter drives the weight toward the ceiling during a clean and jerk. Snapping the knees straight provides the speed needed for a successful overhead lift.
