Drive Volley Meaning in Tennis

A drive volley is a powerful shot hit out of the air using a full groundstroke swing instead of a short punch. This usually happens when a player is moving forward and receives a high, floating ball that has not yet bounced. Instead of waiting for it to drop, the player swings aggressively to finish the point with speed. It is a high-risk but high-reward shot that catches the opponent off guard. The ball travels much faster than a standard volley because of the long racquet path. This shot is particularly effective on slow-moving lobs that land in the middle of the court. For example, a player might hit a drive volley forehand to punish a weak defensive shot from their rival. This aggressive move ends the rally instantly and prevents the opponent from recovering their position. It requires perfect timing to hit the ball cleanly while it is still high in the air.
