A drop ball is a specific pitch that sinks sharply as it reaches the batter. The pitcher uses a downward snap of the wrist to create heavy forward spin. This rotation causes the ball to dive toward the ground at the very last moment. Hitters often swing over the top of the ball or hit weak grounders. A pitcher throws a drop ball that starts at the waist and ends at the shins. The batter swings and misses because the ball moved below the expected hitting path. This pitch is highly effective at inducing ground outs rather than dangerous fly balls. Pitchers must master the release point to ensure the ball drops into the strike zone. Consistent movement makes the drop ball a primary weapon for many elite softball pitchers.
