Drop Return Meaning in Tennis

A drop return is a delicate shot hit immediately after the serve that lands very close to the net. Instead of hitting the ball deep, the receiver uses a soft touch to make the ball die just over the other side. This is an extremely rare and difficult shot to pull off, especially against a fast serve. It is most effective when the server stays far back behind the baseline after hitting their serve. The sudden change in distance forces the server to sprint forward with no warning. If done correctly, the ball bounces twice before the server can even reach the service line. For example, a player might surprise their opponent by hitting a drop return on a slow second serve during a critical point.
